In response to the Air India tragedy, Tata Group pledges ₹1 crore to each victim's family, full medical care for the injured, and support for rebuilding B J Medical’s hostel.
Air India is operating special relief flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Ahmedabad for the families of crash victims and crew. The airline has also set up dedicated hotlines, including one for international callers, to assist with travel arrangements.
Police Chief Malik stated: "One survivor was found in seat 11A and is currently receiving treatment at the hospital. It's too early to confirm the exact number of casualties. As the aircraft crashed into a residential area, the death toll could rise."
An Air India plane crashed in India with more than 240 people on board. Air India and the Ahmedabad fire department issued a report on the accident at the airport in the western Indian city on Thursday. The Indian Civil Aviation Authority stated that 242 people were on board the plane.
The passengers included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British, seven Portuguese, and a Canadian. Two pilots and 10 cabin crew were also aboard. The aircraft crashed "immediately after takeoff," the agency said in its statement. It crashed outside the airport grounds.
"It is with deep sadness that I confirm that Air India Flight 171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick was involved in a tragic accident today," Air India CEO Natarajan Chandrasekaran said on the online service X. Black smoke rose above Ahmedabad Airport, an AFP reporter reported. Flight number AI171 is a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which seats more than 200 people.
Indian Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu expressed his "shock and devastation" over the accident. "My thoughts are with everyone on board and their families," he said in New Delhi. All necessary measures are being taken "to ensure medical care and rescue operations."
According to police, all 242 people on board, as well as others at the crash site, apparently died in the crash of an Air India plane in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad. "It appears there are no survivors in the accident," local police chief GS Malik told AFP on Thursday. Since the plane crashed into a residential area, there are likely additional fatalities there.
The last major air crash in India occurred in 2010. 158 people died in the failed landing of an Air India plane at the airport in the southern Indian city of Mangalore and eight passengers survived.
